Body Mass Index – Is It a Lie?

Picture
What you need to know when examining your BMI (body mass index) is what exactly you are looking at.

Did you know for example that many elite athletes have an unhealthy BMI? This is true. BMI is based on an arbitrary measurement and calculation based on your height and weight. Some do have a calculation also for age as we lose muscle and gain fat even if we stay the same weight as we age.

So a healthy footballer can easily have a unhealthy BMI because they weigh too much for their height.
For the average person you will find at least 20% of the BMI results will be incorrect.

So… how do you know how much fat loss you need to make to be healthy?

What you need is to have your Body Fat calculated. There are extremely accurate body composition machines available to do this… or you can find someone proficient with Fat Callipers.

The machines are used in hospitals for example with burns victims because they can measure both lean body mass (muscle & bone), fat body mass and also water content.

The machine we have cost us $2,500 and we have always used it when helping people to lose fat. It’s accurate and gives clear information to help the weight loss client stay focussed as each week they see there body composition changing and their nutritional eating plan working.

So next time you decide to check your BMI… remember it isn’t always accurate.
